Popularity: The popularity of a product can give you a few clues to whether a product is good or not. Rave reviews and tons of searches per month can mean a product is really good. A lot of bad publicity can sometimes mean the product doesn't deliver what is promised. There are certain instances where bad publicity has to be ignored. For instance, customers complaining about getting ripped off by the free trials are due to the customer not reading the website carefully. Free trials are a great way to test a product, but customers that don't read the part about their card getting charged unless they cancel their subscription, tend to feel manipulated. This kind of complaint has to be disregarded, because it doesn't tell anything about whether the product works or not.
Price: Although price is not a factor in whether a product works or not, we can eliminate a product if it is priced way too high or low. No one in their right mind is going to pay $500 for an anti-wrinkle cream unless the cream could make them 20 again. On the contrary people will go to some discount store and buy an anti-wrinkle product for $6.95 and all they get is a tiny bottle of moisturizer. Cheap products like that never work and sometimes do more harm than good.
